Two thousand and five
I watched the clock turn 12:00 at a party just north of Aberdeen, but for me 2005 didn't really start until four nights later at an undisclosed location in the Highlands of Scotland. 678 miles away from London's madding crowds, we spent the night in a stone-walled bothy, cooking by candlelight on one of my old expedition stoves and sleeping next to a log fire. Thanks to the wind (according to the Met Office, nearby Aonach Moor saw winds gusting to 112mph!!) I didn't sleep that well, but boy did I get some time to dream.
There's a lot coming up. I'm speaking at TED next month, follwed by a week in Svalbard with a team of prize-winners from Serco. I might be speaking in Mexico the week before TED, there will be at least one ski training trip to Norway and Tony and I have just snagged last-minute places in this year's London Marathon (where I'd like to run sub-three hours). Jeepers.
